Physical fitness
For physical fitness (gym, sports, swimming, dance, etc.) the fund reimburses up to ISK 23,000 in a 12-month period, for receipts dated after January 1st, 2018, but never more than 50% of the cost. For further information, see Efling’s website.

For receipts dated before January 1st 2018 the fund reimburses up to ISK 17,000 in a 12-month period.

The centre/school/club must be a legal entity (have an ID number and a business address) with facilities and organized activities,
and have certified sports teachers or instructors.
Glasses – Contact lenses
Grants are given for 50% of the cost, up to ISK 35,000 in a 24-month period, for receipts dated after January 1st, 2018.

For receipts dated before January 1st 2018 the fund reimburses up to ISK 17,000 in a 12-month period.

Physiotherapy and rehabilitation
The fund reimburses up to ISK 2,500 for each session, up to 15 times in a 12-month period, for receipts dated after January 1st, 2018, but never more than 75% of the cost paid by the member.

For receipts dated before January 1st 2018 the fund reimburses up to ISK 2,000 for each session, up to 20 times in a 12-month period.

Grants are given for rehabilitation and treatment from a licensed physiotherapist, a licenced therapeutic massager, a massage therapist with a diploma from Fjölbrautaskólinn í Ármúla, an occupational therapist, a speech therapist, a nutritionist, an osteopath or a chiropractor.
Psychological therapy
The fund reimburses up to ISK 6,000 for each session, but never more than 50% of the cost, for up to 15 times in a 12-month period.
Grants are given for treatments with a psychologist, a psychiatric nurse, a social worker, a family counsellor, a life coach, an eating addiction therapist from MFM, an art therapist, and in cases of ADHD diagnosis in adults. Grants are only given for psychological therapy by therapists not covered by the Icelandic Health Insurance, therefore it is not given for an appointment with a psychiatrist.
Cancer screening - The Icelandic Cancer Society – primary screening
The cost of primary screening (cervical and breast cancer) screening is reimbursed in full (ISK 4,500 or ISK 6,700).
Cancer screening - The Icelandic Cancer Society – further examination
The fund reimburses up to ISK 10,000, once in a 12-month period, but never more than 100% of the cost.
Grants are given for further examinations at the Icelandic Cancer Society, for colon cancer screening/colonoscopy and for men’s prostate cancer screening.
Risk evaluation
The fund reimburses up to ISK 10,000, once in a 12-month period. If a member requires another risk evaluation within a 12-month period, the fund reimburses ISK 6,000 for the second evaluation.
Grants are given for risk evaluation at Hjartavernd where the Icelandic Health Insurance does not participate in the cost, or for a health risk assessment from an acknowledged party.
Laser/refractive eye surgery
Grants are given for refractive surgery where the Icelandic Health Insurance does not participate in the cost. The amount reimbursed is  up to ISK 50,000 for each eye. Grants are given only once for each eye.
NLFÍ Rehabilitation
The fund reimburses ISK 2,000 per day, for up to 42 calendar days in a 12-month period, but never more than 50% of the cost.
Hearing aid
Grants are given for up to 50% of the cost, but never more than ISK 100,000. Grants are given once in a 36-month period.
Quit smoking course
The fund reimburses up to ISK 15,000 once in a 12-month period, but never more than 50% of the cost.
Grants are given for participation in a course held by an organizer acknowledged by the Directorate of Health.
SÁÁ Addiction counselling
The fund reimburses up to ISK 1,500 for each session, up to 25 times in a 12-month period, but never more than 50% of the cost
Sleep masks/CPAP devices (used for sleep apnea)

The fund reimburses ISK 1,125 per month or up to ISK 13,500 in a 12-month period.

Gait analysis
The fund reimburses the analysis cost (ISK 3,900 – 5,500) but not the cost of insoles.
Dyslexia diagnosis
Grants are given for up to 50% of the cost of the diagnosis, but never more than ISK 15,000, once.
Members can apply to Efling’s educational funds for grants for participation in a dyslexia treatment course.
IVF or artificial insemination
The grant is given two times. The fund reimburses up to ISK 100,000 the first time and ISK 50,000 the second time, but never more than 50% of the cost.
Adoption abroad
Grant on account of international adoption of a child from abroad. The grant amount is up to ISK 200,000, once.

Preventive measures and rehabilitation grants

In addition to Sickness Benefits it is the funds role to support preventive measures that promote its members’ health and safety.

Documents need to be delivered to the fund by the twentieth of each month, in order to ensure payment at the end of the month.
How Do I Apply for Grants?*
*If the twentieth comes up on the weekend the application must be delivered before closing time on the Friday before.
** Note. A special deadline in December that is advertised in advance.

 

Grant conditions

  • Premiums must have been paid on behalf of the member for at least the last 6 consecutive months. Three months in the case of cancer screening.
  • The applicant must be employed, with premiums being paid to Efling on his/her behalf at the time of grant application. However, members can apply for grants for up to three months after payments stop, if the receipt dates back to the period where the member was paying to Efling. Those who were members of Efling for at least 5 consecutive years prior to retirement
    due to age or disability, are entitled to grants for up to 24 months after retirement.
  • The grant amounts are based on the premiums of minimum wages for full-time employment. Members who work part-time receive a proportionate amount. For a primary cancer screening it is enough to have paid an amount equal to the examination fee.
  • The right to grants lapses if the receipt is older than 12 months.
