Representatives of the British trade union Unite the Union came to Iceland last week to put pressure on the Bakkavör brothers, Lýður and Ágúst Guðmundsson, to pay their employees in the UK decent wages. About 400 members of Unite the Union, who work at Bakkavör’s factory in Spalding, England, have been on strike since September 27 to demand wage increases.
The brothers own about half of Bakkavör, but the company has paid very high dividends to shareholders for the last two years. At the same time, staff wages have not kept up with inflation.
The British trade union representatives visited Efling Union and spoke about their struggle for decent conditions at the Efling confidants seminar last Thursday. The confidants of Efling send warm greetings to their colleagues in Unite the Union and stand with them in their struggle.
Unite the Union has planned more actions in Iceland in the coming weeks, and Efling will assist its colleagues as much as possible in that respect. Go Unite and Bakkavör staff!
