On May 1st, International Workers’ Day, Efling members took an active part in the march and the program at Ingólfstorg square. Participants walked from Skólavörðuholt down to Ingólfstorg, where speeches and various performances took place. One of the speakers was Karla Esperanza Barralaga Ocón, a care worker, union representative, and board member of Efling.
Karla’s speech was both powerful and moving. She described herself as a voice for those who cannot speak Icelandic and those being exploited in the labor market. She emphasized that the day should be celebrated, but the fight is far from over.
“We should celebrate today, but the struggle is far from over. Fake unions are still trying to steal our rights, force frightened workers to sign unfair contracts, and silence those who demand fair wages and respect,” she said.
Karla concluded her speech by reminding everyone that the day should be more than just a celebration – it should also be a promise. “A promise to fight for those who can’t fight for themselves, to stand up against injustice, and to demand justice.”
Solidarity and Joy at Efling‘s Family Festival
Later that day, at 3:00 PM the celebrations carried on with Efling’s family event taking place at the Whales of Iceland museum. Members and their families of all ages gathered to enjoy entertainment together in a unique setting surrounded by majestic whale displays. DJ Sunna Ben provided music, and the lively brass band added to the festive mood. Circus acts and face painting delighted the youngest guests.
A wide selection of food and treats was available for everyone to enjoy. Attendees could choose from pizzas, hamburgers, donuts, cupcakes, ice cream, cotton candy, popcorn, soda, and coffee.
Efling thanks attendees for a fantastic day filled with solidarity and joy.
