Minister at the Efling Congress: “Such treatment must not be tolerated”

Minister of Social Affairs and Housing, Ragnar Þór Ingólfsson, addressed the Efling Congress this morning, emphasising the importance of the union’s struggle for improved wages and rights. He described the congress as a historic milestone and praised Efling for bringing its members together for discussion and policy shaping.

In his speech, the minister addressed Efling members directly about their importance in Icelandic society. “We need these working hands, without them the wheels of the economy cannot turn,” he said, adding that the mistreatment of workers, particularly migrant workers, is unacceptable. “Such treatment must not be tolerated,” he stressed.

Ragnar Þór also highlighted the importance of close cooperation between the government and the labour movement, noting that its experience is vital in preventing violations of workers’ rights. He said he would work on measures to ensure collective agreements are respected and that workers return home safely after the working day.

Addressing members directly, he said their struggle has been crucial in securing rights for working people in Iceland and remains essential. He encouraged them to continue being a strong voice and to take an active role within the union.

Housing was also a key topic in the speech. The minister described the situation on the rental market as unacceptable and called for increased construction and measures to ensure housing security. He noted that Efling has played an important role in holding authorities accountable on these issues.

Looking ahead, he pointed out that despite technological change and new challenges, the need for a strong labour movement will never disappear. He urged Efling members to continue standing together and shaping the future of the labour market.

Following the address, the minister also answered numerous questions from delegates on various issues, with housing being particularly prominent in the discussion.
