The central committee of The Icelandic Confederation of Labour (Alþýðusambands Íslands – ASÍ) declares its full support for the strike of Efling now underway in Kópavogur, Seltjarnarnes, Mosfellsbær, Hveragerði and Ölfus. The collective agreements of Efling are a key factor in improving the wages of those who receive the lowest pay in Icelandic society. Collective agreements in the abovementioned municipalities expired over a year ago and talks have yielded no results. The Icelandic Association of Local Authorities (Samband íslenskra sveitarfélaga – SÍS) has refused to give Efling a collective agreement comparable to that which the state, the City of Reykjavík and Faxaflóahafnir have already reached. A strike call was approved by 90% of all the votes cast. The central committee of ASÍ calls on the members of all its member unions as well as other workers to respect the actions of Efling and prevent strike breaking from taking place.
